The Crit

Phil Dunne

Some more inspiration. Note the ones with photography and illustration fused together as one composition. These are my FAVOURITES!

Media/Frame/Resolution considerations..

Everything I have found on Joan of Arc so far has been traditional, print based and typically classical old school illustrations. I have been trying to decide upon what type of media I will use to produce my final resolution and have decided to use the traditional print based approach, but with a modern mix of media - photography and my own style of illustration.
With regard to frame, at the moment I am still unsure on size. I would like it to have variation and the composition to change place within the frame throughout. I feel it will make it better by doing so by keeping the viewer interested rather than them feeling all the sequences look the same and predicting what will come next.
I am sure my resolution will contain both photography and illustration. The style of illustration has yet to be decided upon because I am still playing with colour and stroke. It will be all purely image based.

Illustration and photography mix ideas..

I have decided that I would like to show my day in the life of Joan mixed media. It will be portrayed using a combination of photography and my own personal illustration. At the moment i am looking to only illustrate Joan of Arc however, i have been experimenting with other characters too and have tried it out using them first. I feel that the mix will work however careful consideration needs to be taken on the sequence and how many sequences will be in the day. This i still need to clarify and I also need to take great care in perfecting the photographs and then drawing into them. By not taking care in this I feel it will ruin the complete composition. The photographs are the most important part. Frame is important to me and how the composition lies within it.
This is some work done for the Mark Ronson music video 'Just' which I have found quite inspiring to look at with regard to placing illustration and graffiti into the everyday circumstance. Take a look :)

Joan of Arc figure ideas..

I am currently trying to decide upon how I want to depict Joan of Arc within my Day in the life brief. So far I haven't really illustrated her yet because I haven't determined a style in which I feel is going to be strong enough for a character as strong herself. I have however decided that I would like her to be shown on horseback. This shows her in her dominant role and leading her group of troops to war... Or rather following me on my typical day to college!
These are some images that I have managed to find as figures portraying her...

Toy soldier ideas..

Ha I love these. I'm currently looking at inspiration for my 'Day in the life of... Joan of Arc' brief. So far I have been looking at illustrating the full day. However, i think it would be really fun to portray her as a little toy soldier and have her in an every day situation doing mundane things, like brushing her teeth and having lunch. But do it by photographing a toy soldier dressed as her. This would all be done via the medium of photography, however I would have to buy or make my own little figure of her.
These are some ideas that i feel would be the kind of look I'm going for..

FREE MAG!

I picked up this free magazine called 'No-Title' last night at a bar in Leeds. As soon as I saw it I was like, 'that's going on my blog!' How geeky...
I loved the vibrant colours and the bold black outlines of the front cover. I also found the black and white story boards quite interesting and inspirational for my current brief, 'A day in the life...'
Take a peek :)

Joan of Arc

Over the past week or so I have been researching into Joan of Arc. Everyone on our illustration module got given a character to research, mine being good ole Joan. I wasn't amazingly pleased when I found I'd got her and didn't have the slightest bit of knowledge about her. Now, we're best mates! She was quite a character...

Born 6th January 1412 and died May 30th 1431. She was executed or rather burned at the stake for her beliefs and being adamant that she received 'visions' from God. More properly known as Jeanneton Darc, she was captured by the English, tried by an ecclesiastical court, and burned at the stake at nineteen. Twenty-four years later, the Holy See reviewed the decision of the ecclesiastical court, found her innocent, and declared her a martyr. She was beatified in 1909 and later canonized in 1920. So basically she was found innocent and made a Saint for dying for her beliefs knowing that her death would be immanent if she continued to believe.
Joan asserted that she had visions from God that told her to recover her homeland from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. This is what got her into so much bother...
She was known by yet another name too, The Maid of Orleans. For just a peasant girl from eastern France she did a lot of things. One of which being leading the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War, claiming divine guidance, and was indirectly responsible for the coronation of Charles VII.

I've even got a better understanding of all these posh words too. And all this is thought was a load of rubbish! How my opinion has changed over this week...
